Transferring Your Insurance License When You Move

Transferring Your Insurance License When You Move

Moving is a hassle, whether down the block or across the country. There’s a lot to consider on the personal side of a move, how it affects your family, the safety of moving your belongings, and many other things. If you are an insurance agent, you’ll need to plan for transferring your insurance license.

You may be wondering what states have reciprocity for insurance licenses. Will you need to get relicensed? How will you transfer your license, and what are reciprocity programs? Do all states have a reciprocal agreement? We’ll look at these questions and more to make one part of your move easier.

Can I Carry My Insurance License to Another State When I Move?

The good news is that if you move to another state, you can get your license transferred to the state you are moving to and may be exempt from training or testing requirements. There are exceptions, but most states will recognize your up-to-date license and training. For the most up-to-date information, contact the state insurance department that you are moving to.

What are Reciprocity Programs

Reciprocity as an insurance agent is an agreement between states allowing an insurance agent to acquire a license without having to take a licensure exam or a pre-licensing course or fulfill an education requirement. Most states will recognize that your past training and current license are valid in the new state you are moving to.

Some states have complicated reciprocal programs. For example, Florida has a reciprocal agreement with all states but not New York, California, and Hawaii.

How to Transfer Your Insurance License When Moving to Another State

Every state will have its own rules for transferring an insurance license when moving. Some states may have special exceptions. You’ll need to contact the state’s insurance department for specific details and procedures before you move.

What is a Certificate of Good Standing

A certificate of good standing means the insurance adjuster is licensed in the state, and has had the training needed and other specifications. When transferring a license, you’ll need a certificate of good standing from your current state’s insurance department. Certificates of good standing may be scanned as an online copy, or you could be sent as a hard copy through the mail. Delivery times will vary and depends on the state you’re requesting it from.

Once you receive this, you’ll send it along with other documentation, possible fees, and other materials to your new state’s insurance department. Make sure to allow plenty of time for your new application to be reviewed and processed.

How to Tell if Your New State Requires a Clearance Letter?

A clearance letter may be required from the previous state of residence. A clearance letter is issued for agents moving to another state and applying for another resident license. You may request to cancel your old state’s license status or confirm your license is inactive.

Many states require a fee to process the clearance letter, and you’ll need to contact the previous state’s insurance department to find all the specifics. When submitting a clearance letter, you may be allowed to transfer your license to the new state you are moving to. This is known as a letter of certification.
