The Virginia Bureau of Insurance (a division of the Virginia State Corporation Commission) requires students to pass a licensing examination before becoming an insurance agent/producer.
The stated goal of the Virginia Bureau of Insurance is to ensure that the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia are given access to adequate and reliable insurance protection; that those insurance companies that are selling policies are financially sound in order to be able to fulfill their obligated payment of claims; that the agents selling coverage and policies are qualified to knowledgably do so, and conduct their business in accordance with statutory and regulatory requirements, as well as maintaining acceptable standards of professional conduct; and that the insurance policies are of high quality, understandable, and priced fairly.
Many temporary, restricted, or miscellaneous lines of authority (e.g., Limited Lines Credit, Surplus Lines Broker, etc.) do not require a licensing examination in the state of Virginia.
CPMI provides courses only for those lines for which the Bureau of Insurance requires an examination before the sale or negotiation of insurance policies.
For details about specific insurance licensing requirements for each state, visit the National Insurance Producer Registry.
