Colorado Insurance Continuing Education Requirements
The Colorado Division of Insurance requires insurance providers to complete quality Coloraodo insurance continuing education (CE) courses every two years. License Renewal Requirements
Colorado’s required continuing education (CE) credit hours must be completed every two years or your insurance license will not be renewed. Producers must complete 24 hours of continuing education (CE). At least 3 of the hours must be in ethics, and 18 hours must be spent on lines of authority for which a license is held. Up to 12 hours of excess credit may carry over to your next renewal period, as long as the courses were taken during the last 120 days of the licensing cycle. Ethics carries over as general credit.
NOTE: All Colorado producers licensed to sell property or personal lines insurance must complete 3 hours of continuing education (CE) in homeowners insurance coverage each license term.
There are a few categories of insurance producers who are exempt from Colorado’s requirements. They are:
- Nonresident producers who are licensed in good standing in their home state and pay a biennial continuation fee to the Colorado Division of Insurance.
- Producers who are licensed to only write Travel Ticket Selling, Bail Bonding, Title, Limited Lines Credit, and Crop Hail insurance.
Time for your Colorado insurance license renewal? It's important to know the requirements:
- 24 hours of continuing education (CE) are required every 2 years.
- 3 hours ethics.
- 18 hours approved for lines in which the license is held.
- 3 hours miscellaneous.
- Property and personal lines insurance producers in Colorado must complete 3 hours of continuing education (CE) in homeowner's insurance coverage each license term.
- Up to 12 hours of excess credit may carry over to your next renewal period if the courses were taken during the last 120 days of the licensing cycle.
- Ethics carries over as general credit.
- Completion dates for repeated insurance courses must be at least 2 years apart.
- You must pass your course completion examination.
- Courses completion exams must be proctored and are not open book.
