South Dakota Insurance CE Requirements

We offer several courses that meet the Division of Insurance, South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation license renewal requirements.

South Dakota insurance continuing education credit hours must be completed every two years. That threshold is set by the South Dakota Division of Insurance.
Every two years:
- All licensed resident producers must complete at least 10 hours of CE.
- Agents licensed in Life & Health and Property & Casualty must complete 20 CE hours to comply with state requirements.
- Crop-only producers must complete 4 hours of CE each renewal period.
- South Dakota requires 10 hours of CE for a L&H or P&C license (20 hours for L&H and P&C).
Other requirements:
- Excess CE credit hours do not carry over to subsequent license renewal periods.
- Courses may not be repeated for credit in the same two-year renewal term.
South Dakota exempts these individuals from completing insurance CE requirements:
- Licensed attorneys
- Limited lines producers
- Non-resident agents
Federal law does require individuals to complete the LTC course before they can begin selling long-term care policies. This applies to everyone, including those that are exempt.
Time for your South Dakota insurance license renewal? It's important to know the requirements:
- 20 hours of CE are required every 2 years for agents licensed in Life, Health, Property, and Casualty (8 hours minimum in LH, 8 hours minimum in PC).
- Courses cannot be repeated for credit in the same renewal period.
- Crop only agents must complete four hours of CE approved for crop insurance.
- You may complete approved online, textbook, or classroom courses.
- You must pass your course completion examination.
- Excess credits will not be counted toward the next renewal period.
- A proctor is required.
- Only 10 hours of CE are required for:
- Life and Health-only agents.
- Property and Casualty-only agents.
- Farm Mutual or Personal Lines agents.
- Crop & PC agents (2 hours for crop & 8 hours for PC).
- Crop & LH agents (2 hours for crop & 8 hours for LH).
- Only 20 hours of CE are required for Crop & LH & PC agents (2 hours for crop, 8 hours for PC, & 10 hours for LH).
After you pass our course, we will send your completion information to the South Dakota Department of Insurance through Sircon.
