Texas Insurance Continuing Education (CE) Requirements

License Renewal Requirements
Texas insurance continuing-education (CE) is required of all Texas producers licensed in major lines (i.e., General Lines; Life, Accident, and Health; Property and Casualty, Managing General Agent, etc.). Courses must be completed once every two years with at least 24 hours of approved instruction. Two hours must be in ethics.
Other requirements:
- Only half of the total required 24 hours may be taken through self-study Texas continuing-education (CE) programs.
- One half of CE programs must be classroom or "classroom equivalent" course hours.
- Licenses expire after the allotted period of time on the license holder's birthday.
- Limited lines producers must complete 10 hours of study (2 of which must be in ethics).
If you have held a continual license for at least 20 years from the Texas Department of Insurance, you are exempt from the insurance CE requirement.
Additionally, under limited circumstances, it may be possible for an extension or exemption to be granted by the Texas Department of Insurance (DOI). Proper documentation of a circumstance beyond the licensee's control must be provided. Examples of this could include a long-term illness or being stationed abroad during military service.
All individuals must take the required long-term care (LTC) course to sell long-term care policies, including exempt individuals.

It's important to remember the following:
- Every 2 years, 24 hours of CE must be completed for non-exempt individuals.
- Acceptable courses include online, textbook, and classroom offerings.
- Ethics requirements – you must complete 2 of the 24 hours in this study area.
- In class or classroom equivalent requirements – 12 of the 24 hours must be completed here.
- A score of 70% or better is required to pass your course completion examination.
- No proctor is needed for course completion exams and these tests are open book.
- You cannot apply extra CE credit hours towards new license renewal periods.
- Agents may complete any course, not just those approved for their specific line of authority.
- One course type per renewal period – courses cannot be repeated for credit within the same time frame.
After you pass our course(s), CPMI will send your completion information to the Texas Department of Insurance through Sircon.
