Wisconsin Insurance Continuing Education (CE) Requirements

License Renewal Requirements
Wisconsin Insurance continuing education standards are set by the Wisconsin Department of Insurance which requires credit hours to be completed every two years.
All WI licensed resident producers must complete 24 hours of continuing education (CE) within the time frame, including 3 hours in ethics.
Additionally, you must understand the following requirements for WI insurance agents:
- Wisconsin insurance licenses renew every two years on the last day of the licensee's month of birth.
- Excess continuing education (CE) credit hours cannot be carried over to subsequent insurance license renewal periods.
- Courses may not be repeated for credit within a single renewal period.
- Any insurance courses approved for continuing education (CE) in Wisconsin may be used for renewed credits. For example, Life Insurance agents may take a class in Life & Health.
There are reasons why you may be exempt from certain Wisconsin state guidelines:
- You are not required to complete the biennial insurance continuing education (CE) requirements if you are a producer licensed only in limited lines or a nonresident.
However, under federal law, even exempt individuals must take the required long-term care (LTC) course before they can begin selling long-term care policies in WI.
Time for your Wisconsin insurance license renewal? It's important to know the requirements:
- Complete 24 hours of continuing education (CE) every 2 years.
- Complete 3 hours of ethics coursework (within the 24-hour requirement).
Other pertinent information:
- You may take any courses approved for continuing education (CE) in the state of Wisconsin for credit.
- It is acceptable to take online, textbook, or classroom courses.
- You must pass your course completion examination with a 70% or better.
- It is not possible to carry over excess credits to the next renewal period.
- You may not repeat courses for credit in the same renewal period.
- You are required to complete course exams in the presence of a proctor.
- Exams are not open book.
After you pass the CPMI course, we will handle your completion information by sending it to the Wisconsin Department of Insurance and Sircon.
