Oregon Insurance Continuing Education (CE) Requirements
The Insurance Continuing Education (CE) courses designed by CPMI will help you successfully maintain your insurance license(s) in the state of Oregon. We offer a number of resources that will help you meet the standards set forth by the Oregon Division of Financial Regulation:
- An extensive selection of affordable, easy to follow online course packages. These consist of individual courses (including ethics programming) and bundled classes, all for under $40.
- Content that is current, relevant and interactive. Hone your skills with lots of examples that are useful and correlate to real-world practices.
- Timely, comprehensive report completions. You will receive performance indications and more.
Although CPMI is registered with and approved by the Oregon Division of Financial Regulation, that registration does not imply endorsement by insurance division.

License Renewal Requirements
The state of Oregon requires that continuing education (CE) credit hours be completed every two years, per the requirements of the Oregon Insurance Division. Agents of any line can take courses for insurance lines they are not licensed in.
Requirements:
- All licensed resident producers must complete 24 hours of continuing education (CE).
- The 24-hour requirement must include:
- 3 hours of ethics.
- 3 hours of Oregon law.
- Every renewal period, viatical settlement brokers should complete 4 total hours (3 hours in viatical training and 1 hour in ethics).
- Life insurance agents who also operate as viatical settlement brokers do not need to complete any additional continuing education (CE) credits for their viatical license renewal.
Additional information:
- You will renew in even years if you are a producer born in an even year. If you are a producer born in an odd year, you will renew in odd years.
- Extra credit hours do not count towards the next Oregon insurance license renewal period.
- If you take a course, you may not repeat it for credit in the same two-year renewal term.
Oregon allows a few exemptions to the continuing education (CE) requirements:
- Nonresident agents
- Limited-lines agents
However, federal law requires that even exempt individuals take the required long term care (LTC) course. Once completed, they will be allowed to sell long-term care policies.

Remember:
- 24 hours of continuing education (CE) are required every 2 years.
- 3 hours must be in Ethics and 3 hours in Oregon insurance law (of 24 hours total).
- Online, textbook, or classroom courses are acceptable.
- Agents must take courses approved for the lines they are licensed in.
- Courses cannot be repeated for credit in the same renewal period (two-years).
- Excess credit hours cannot be carried over to the next renewal period.
- You must pass your course completion examination.
- Courses completion exams are not open book. If you are not taking your exam online, the exam must be taken with a proctor.
- Proctors for exams not taken online must be registered with the state as a proctor, a public librarian, an employee of a college (not a college that is operated primarily for the insurance industry), an employee of a law office, or a currently licensed public accountant.
