Illinois Insurance CE Requirements
Illinois has unique requirements for insurance license renewals. Once every two years, insurance providers are required to take at least 24 hours of approved Continuing Education (CE) courses. CPMI's I Illinois insurance continuing education courses have everything you need to maintain your certification. Illinois insurance continuing education must be completed by all resident licensed producers (agents) before renewal of their insurance producer license once every two years. IL resident producers are required to have a total of 24 hours of approved illinois insurance continuing education courses on file with the Department. Three of those hours must be Ethics training.
Additional Information:
- Online & textbook based CE courses are allowed.
- All agents must complete at least 3 hours of Ethics (in-class or live webinar) to comply with the Illinois insurance CE requirement. The live ethics class or webinar does not have an exam requirement.
- The Long-Term Care Partnership course is required by the Illinois Department of Insurance for all agents before they can sell any Long-Term Care (LTC) insurance policies in the state of Illinois. It supplies 8 hours of CE and must be followed in future license renewal periods with at least 4 hours of other LTC courses.
- To sell annuities in Illinois you must be a licensed life insurance producer and complete a one time, 4-hr continuing education annuity course.
- All licensed Illinois insurance producers who wish to sell National Flood Insurance Program policies (NFIP) are required to complete an approved, one time, course on flood insurance.
With the exception of LTC, non-residents are exempt from insurance continuing education in Illinois.

- Industrial Life
- Industrial Health
- Limited Travel Health
- Limited Lines
- Temporary License
- Baggage
- Trip Cancellation
Time for your Illinois insurance license renewal? It's important to know the requirements:
- 24 hours of CE are required every 2 years.
- 3 of the 24 hours must be ethics.
- Producer/agent ethics may be completed by webinar or classroom.
- Adjuster ethics needs to be completed in a classroom.

- Online, textbook, or classroom courses are acceptable.
- Courses cannot be taken for credit twice in the same renewal period.
- Up to 12 hours of credit can be carried forward to the next renewal period.
- You must pass your course completion examination with a 70% or better.
- Course completion exams can be taken without a proctor and are open book.
- Any course approved for CE in Illinois may be taken for credit.

Insurance producers outside of Illinois are should view the National Insurance Producer Registry for more information about other states’ insurance license renewal requirements.
